Find out about all the ESG Policies Suttons are aiming to achieve

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance.

It is a framework used to measure a business’s impact on the environment and society, evaluating how transparent and accountable it is.

Recognising our role as a leading logistics provider, we acknowledge the importance of integrating sustainable principles into our operations.

In pursuit of this commitment, we have developed an ESG policy designed to mitigate our carbon emissions and minimise our environmental footprint.

Why is ESG Important to Suttons?

As a logistics company, we are involved in significant transportation and distribution activities, which can contribute to carbon emissions and environmental degradation.

An ESG policy helps us identify and implement measures to reduce our environmental impact, such as:

  • Investing in sustainable energy sources.
  • Optimising transportation routes.
  • Adopting fuel-efficient vehicles.

A strong ESG policy emphasises social responsibility, ensuring fair labour practices, promoting diversity and inclusion, and contributing positively to the communities in which we operate.

Our Environmental Policy – ROAR

ESG Policy 2024

We’ve developed an exclusive ESG strategy known as ROAR – Reduce, Optimise, Alternate, Replace. This strategy is designed to guide us in achieving our environmental goals:

Reduce: Reducing carbon emissions via our carbon reduction plan and reducing fuel usage by improving fuel efficiency through the use of telematics in trucks to minimise carbon emissions.

Optimise: Using advanced logistics and planning tools we can optimise transport routes for higher efficiency which reduces our environmental impact.

Alternate: We’re exploring ways we can utilise alternative fuel sources which include renewable energy such as HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil).

Replace: 99.5% of our truck fleet currently operates with Euro 6 engines, and we are committed to achieving 100% in Q1 of 2024. This is a substantial stride in reducing our emissions.

Our ESG Initiatives

These are the current ESG initiatives that we have at Suttons Tankers:

HVO Fuel

We are delighted to have trialled Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil as an alternative fuel. The alternative fuel is compatible with existing diesel engines without any need for modifications.

We want to invest more in renewable energy in the future and we see this as an excellent partnership to test on our tankers.

Running off 100% renewable Energy

All of the electricity that we consume at Suttons Tankers’ owned sites is sourced from renewable energy.

Getting 100% of our electricity from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric will significantly help us to reduce our scope 2 emissions.

We’re aware of our carbon footprint which is why we wanted to achieve 100% renewable energy consumption.

Thanks to this commitment we have been able to reduce our carbon footprint significantly.

Switch it Off Campaign

Our ‘Switch it Off’ campaign encourages our employees to make a collective conscious effort to turn off unused lights, equipment and machinery.

We believe it is vitally important to foster a culture that values energy conservation.

By having our staff participate in this initiative we’ll save on our energy bills and also get to make a dent in the energy we’re consuming.

Thanks to this initiative we’re promoting responsible energy practices throughout our entire company.

Energy Efficiency Measures

As well as sourcing renewable energy we also want to improve our energy efficiency throughout the business. To achieve this we have deployed certain measures, including:

  • Energy monitoring and auditing: By analysing and assessing how we use our energy we can look at areas of improvement. We carry out energy audits which allow us to measure energy efficiency. Then once we find ways to improve our efficiency we can deploy energy efficiency measures.
  • EV charging stations: To encourage our staff to use EVs (electric vehicles) we have installed EV charging stations at our offices. This initiative helps target carbon emissions when our staff commutes to work. Having a convenient easy-to-use EV charging system throughout our premises will encourage our employees to choose EVs as a mode of transport, therefore reducing carbon emissions.
  • LED lighting: In our ongoing efforts to boost energy efficiency, we’ve exchanged conventional lighting systems in our facilities with energy-efficient LED lighting. Currently, approximately 90% of our lighting infrastructure consists of LEDs. This not only decreases energy consumption but also extends the lifespan of the lighting, thereby reducing maintenance requirements and minimising waste generation. Our goal is to achieve 100% LED lighting across all facilities in 2024.

Net Zero by 2040 – Suttons Tankers

Guided by our unwavering commitment to ESG objectives, we’ve implemented a robust set of initiatives to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

This involves a phased transition away from traditional fossil fuels, exploring cleaner alternatives such as HVO, and using renewable electricity.

By prioritising these eco-friendly options, we aim to significantly reduce our reliance on conventional diesel fuel and make substantial strides towards our overarching goal of net-zero emissions by 2040.

This strategic shift underscores our dedication to responsible and sustainable practices, driving positive change in our environmental impact.

Let us help you achieve your sustainability goals with our fleet of eco-conscious tankers.
