Job Title:  Operations Supervisor
Number of Days:
3 days per week
Salary:  £25,200 per annum
Work:  Leeds (regular travel required to multiple sites)

Job Purpose

The YW operation supervisor will lead the driver workforce in designated operating centres, delivering adherence to Compliance & SSHEQ processes. Stringent adherence to the legislative stipulations of Statutory Documents and Suttons SSHEQ requirements is mandatory to ensure the Company’s industry leading position on safety and compliance is maintained and enforced.

The role will ensure that all drivers are fully trained, competent and can carry out their duties and responsibilities, with focus on safely improving efficiency. The YW operation supervisor will manage effective communication with drivers to ensure they are engaged, motivated and that performance is managed.

The operation supervisor will be working directly for the contract operations manager, and they need to ensure they divide their day, so they have site presence across all 13 depots on a regular basis. They will be required to assist with inductions and general administration relating to inductions, as well as assisting with investigations.

Key Accountabilities


  • Attend and contribute towards the Safety Meetings with site representatives to further support and improve Safety Standards.​
  • Promote the principles of Behavioural Based Safety to drivers and supporting behavioural safety activities including review of effectiveness.​
  • Complete appropriate risk assessments on Suttons, supplier or customer sites and undertake reviews of SOPs as required.​
  • Supervise traffic Management activities.​
  • Ensure drivers are issued with and use the correct PPE.​

Leadership & Management

  • Manage driver absence by conducting back-to-work conversations and welfare processes for long-term sick.​
  • Driver Engagement through regular face to face contact, safety, spot checks, driving style and compliance discussions. ​

    Customer Service
  • Investigate and respond to any customer complaints or non-conformances, escalating to the Operations Manager if necessary.​

    Operations Management
  • Work with Driver Trainers to ensure all drivers maximise training opportunities available.​
  • Undertake Driver recruitment, interviews, and inductions as part of the recruitment process.​
  • Where appropriate, manage local vehicle checks for safety, accessories such as hoses, tyres, oil checks etc.​
  • Hold disciplinary and grievance investigations following company procedures and escalating to
  • Operations Managers or Contract Manager if necessary. ​
  • Maximise MPG performance, driving efficiency and cost control by regular engagement with drivers to reinforce Smiths driving system using data available from Microlise.​
  • Bring any concerns regarding resource utilisation to the attention of the Contract Operations Manager or YW Contract Manager​
