Suttons History


Suttons founder Alf Sutton began trading in 1926. Since then the company has successfully developed nationally then globally. Suttons has remained family owned throughout this time and members of the Suttons family are still very much involved in the business, they form the majority of the Suttons Group Board and hold senior positions within the Group.

The timeline below gives a brief history of how Suttons has grown in to one of the world’s leading specialist logistics companies.

  • Alf Sutton, with one of Suttons first wagons.

  • Suttons begins rapid growth period as the road transport business developed.

  • Suttons expands into specialist transport for bulk gases and chemicals.

  • Suttons is the first company to offer electrical heating on tank containers.

  • Suttons opens first Sales office in USA.

  • Suttons International opens first office in China, the success of this office has led the company to open 5 more offices in the country.

  • Suttons Road Tankers begins operations in the food sector.

  • Suttons Road Tankers is awarded Motor Transport's "Safety in Operation Award" for the fourth time, a unique achievement.

  • Suttons International forms a joint venture with Arabia Chemical Terminals to create Suttons Arabia.

  • John Sutton appointed Group Chief Executive Officer.

  • Suttons Acquires Shanghai based Han Chi Logistics Co. Ltd, to begin trucking operations in China

  • Suttons Acquires trucking and supply chain services company IS Logistics Group (ISLG) in Singapore

  • Suttons acquires Imperial Tankers to add to its chemical transport capabilities in the UK.
